When I first saw this picture posted on The Sartorialist in ’09ish it kind of blew my mind. Ignoring the unfortunate hat, this lad’s conservative outfit of a white oxford, camel crew neck jumper, grey flannels and snuff suede chukka boots is dragged to a psychedelic world by that wild, bright orange paisley Mackintosh raincoat.
I remember reading that in his first shop, Clothesville, John Simons used to get copies of Burberry raincoats made in wild fabrics like corduroy. I guess that’s where Mackintosh were going with this. Or maybe it’s the coat equivalent of those nasty patterned socks that men who buy their suits from Moss Bros wear like it makes them in some way Dandy.
Whichever is true, I like it. Just wish he hadn’t worn that fucking hat.
